I am in the process of making a rake. After I put a edge on it to keep it sharp, should I heat it up then cool it ? if I do that will it help it hold a edge?

Hi Lyndon, You can go the extra distance and heat treat the blade to make it harder and yes it will keep the edge longer but I have found it unnecessary. The rakes that I made over 20 years ago were made from mild steel and all I do to sharpen the blade is to run a file along the edge and de-burr the back face. OK the width of the blade has been reduced by 3/16" because of the sharpening but that's over 20 years!!! Also if the steel is heat treated too hard then you will have to grind it every time you want to sharpen. The clay will eventually dull the edge of any tool, so I find it easier to dress the edge with a file. Hope this helps. Steve Austin
