Hi all, Just preparing for the competition ( Steeve, how many participants ?? ). Here are the questions : 1) I think I’m going to buy a bandsaw. It seems to be a useful tool for all those clay projects. Is there something particular I have to look when chosing a bandsaw ? The maximum height it can cut is an important thing maybe, although it will be used to cut templates ( they are not very thick usually ). This height can be useful if I want to cut some foam for another project. 2) You said you use some masonite or hardboard to make the templates. Here in France we don’t have masonite, but we have another product that can do the trick. It’s not wood, it’s not plastic, it’s a sort of composite material. Im going to give it a try. My question is : is hardboard or wood strong enough if I use a very firm clay ? The fact of heating the clay and the model with a heatgun can be the solution... Alluminium templates would be more difficult to cut. Are alluminium templates used in this industry ? Thank for your help, I’m looking forward to this challenge. See you Seb

Hi Seb, A good all round bandsaw with a throat height of 6 inches is good enough for light general purpose work. If you check-out my website on the content page, there are links to several tool companies such as Grizzly Industries and Rutland Tools. There you'll be able to do a bit of research. As far as the Masonite, that is a trade name here in the States. It is a tough fiberboard made of wood fibers and is used in construction work. It is robust enough to use as template material and is easily cut on the bandsaw. I'm sure the material that you have is very similar and will be quite adequate to do the job. Aluminum templates are used particularly when there is very fine detail to drag in. The aluminum is easier to file to keep the sharp lines. Typically 1.0mm or 1.5mm aluminum plate is used. Steve A

Ok Steeve. I’ve looked at what I can find in stores and I think the best solution is to cut the templates with an electric jigsaw. Indeed the room I’m working in isn’t very big and a compact tool will be welcome. I’ll chose a good model, able to cut aluminium plates for detail templates. Concerning the masonite, indeed we don’t have this brand in Europe but there is the same material made of wood fibers. It’s seems to be easy to cut and strong enough for what we want to do. Perfect. As you said clay sculpting is all about preparation, so I’m going to prepare well ! ;D See you Thx Seb
