Hi, I am new to the clay modeling business. I love this job and I can not imagine doing anything else. I am currently a contract person working for Genral Motors in Warren Michigan. To the point. I make finishers and various other tools for sale to may fellow team mates at GM and I thought that I would also make them available for sale here. I also make tool handles for sale seprately for those who make their own tools. I am always adding new materials and woods for the handles so check back oftern. The web address is www.geocities.com/altphotodude/ . As a side note, I also make homemade pinhole cameras of my own design. Check them out if you are interested. Thanks Randy J Hilliker

Hi Randy, I've checked out your web page and there is a nice selection for anyone who would like a starter set. For those people visiting the link, make sure to click on the links in the left hand side bar to bring up the offerings otherwise you get just a blank sheet. It's good to see a little participation on the forum. Steve

Randy, Even though you may have a great product for sale at a competitive price the modeling community is very resourceful and in most cases will tackle the job of making their own tools. As you know, there are a few main stream suppliers of modeling tools and it will be very difficult to break into their customer base as their tools are renown worldwide. You may have better luck by offering them at local art supply stores. Best of luck in your endeavors. Steve

Thank you for your feed back. I will always value your input and advice, as I have on a couple occasions.
However, just because there is a company that is established does not mean that anoher cannot come along and offer some competative alternatives. I worked hard to get into this very exclusive position, and I am up for any challenge that I might face in establishing my self as a tool maker. Image if the gentleman who started Industrial Clay Tools out of Warren had given up on making tools. I would like to see myself as providing a service to those modelers that are either to busy to make there own tools and providing tools to those modelers that are begining in the field.
Again thanks for the input and the sound advice that you have provided me. And I look forward to any updates to your very resourcefull web page.

Hi Randy, I absolutely agree with you, if a main stream tool supplier should decide to call it a day then someone would have to fill the void just as they did with the demise of Clark foam in the surfing industry. The only difference is, you have posted asking people to buy tools from you . You haven't offered reasons on why your tools should be purchased, are they better than the competitions in quality or is it just the price break. The modeling community operates very much on word of mouth therefore the better your sales talk the more likely you are of selling your tools. I have visited your website and your tools are undoubtedly the cheapest you will find, now you have to give reason why people should buy them. All the best, Steve

I wish that I could say that I make tools on the same level as chavant or industrial clay tools. But I am just one man working in my very humble workshop. When I say level, I mean the same repetitive consistency that they make their tools. You buy one small clay finisher from them and then buy another one a year later, they will be exactly the same. But I make every tool from raw materials by my own hands. The blade sizes may be the same, but each tool is carefully made, and tested I might add, by my own hand. Each tool is unique in that I use different wood to make the handles that I turn myself. I do make quality and I improve on my designs based on feedback from the people I make them for. I love making things and I love making these tools. I do want to make some money on the side, but I don't want to rip people off and give them an inferior product. I want them to enjoy and to be able to use their tools for years on end. And if they break for some ungodly reason I will replace them. And if someone is unhappy with their tool I will fix it.
I just want to help people by providing them with an cheaper alternative and make some money doing it. I am not much of a salesman, but I hope this convinced at least some people to give me a shot.

Randy, Now you have put a face to your product, people know what you are about and you have integrity and conviction for your product. In that one paragraph you have delivered your sales pitch and everyone knows exactly what they will get. Tools that come with a guarantee, hand made and unique, plus the fact that they are affordable. Good job and I wish you the very best on your sales. Steve
