Steve,
I have found myself working many interior clay models lately. When it comes time to finish the model I always have to borrow a roller stitch tool and roller surface tools. Is there anywhere I can purchase these tools or is there a way I can make them, I would rather make them if possible. I have seen the overstitch spacer tools that leather workers use and these are not the effect I am looking for. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Robert, That's a tough question as I haven't used stitch tools and texture rollers for about 15 years. As I remember the stitch tool could be made from pastry cutters. For the texture rollers, make a silicon mold of the desired texture. The texture of the material would have to be heavy enough to get a good reproduction. For a simple roller wrap the material around a dowel rod ensuring that the joint was perfect. Produce a silicon mold then cast your resin, drill the roller to accept your wire and handle. I would have to go through the process of making them again to be completely sure of the procedures but what I have described is basically it. You can get special ordered texture rollers but the cost is extremely high. I've used mainly sponge rollers to give a texture to interiors. The interior would then be displayed with a story board displaying the various textures and colors for that particular model. I do have some commercially made texture rollers which I will post some photos of when I can find them. If anyone has a better method of producing texture rollers please post your methods. Steve A

Thanks for the reply. I will be using your advice and try to build on it. If I come up with some good results I will share the information. I have gone as far as to reproduce, in alias, a stitch tool I have borrowed. I will then have it rapid prototyped and then cast. I think the one I copied is machined. I will show one to a machinist and see if they can reproduce the part. And I have also found someone with some good roller tools that he is casting for me.
