Ok people, This is a separate thread that expands on the question “what about a contest for beginners,” that Seb mentioned to Jeff on the previous thread. What I have in mind is, clay modeling a 1:10 scale model over a period of 5-6 months. This will give beginners the chance to get a feel for clay modeling and get the necessary material and tools together. The images can be posted during the process and at the end of the period, then judged be myself and Jeff. I would post a poll (list) of vehicles to be considered for modeling and this would be voted on. The vehicle with the most votes would be the selected vehicle to be modeled by all contestants. This will give everyone a specific goal and time frame to go by. At that point I will provide the minimal data required to construct the model (i.e. basic 1:10 scale dimensions) and a few photos. The rest is up to you. Any additional information that you require will have to be researched on the web. Any problems during the modeling process can be addressed on this forum. To be able to vote and compete you have to be a member. Now, I will need some feedback on this proposal to see if people are interested and if I get enough response, then I’ll post the list in a couple of weeks. Don’t forget this is a small model and will require minimal material and tools to compete. Oh yeh! I guess there will have to be some sort of prize, maybe a few modeling tools!!!! Steve A

Sounds like a good idea, i'd certainly be willing to enter. However im unlcear whether your proposing we design out own vehicle or whether you will be setting a design. Personally i'd prefer to design my own vehicle, and if possible could this be a motorcycle?
Thanks, Robin.

Ok guys, It’s good to get a couple of replies, as I said in the opening post, I’ll post a poll to be voted on. The one with the most votes will be the vehicle of choice. What you will be voting on will not be an exotic vehicle; you have to give everyone a fair crack at making the model. As I said it’s for beginners to try and elevate their skills. I like your enthusiasm Robin but for this first event I’d like to keep it to vehicles that are already in production. That way you can readily get images off the web to assist you in the model construction or visit a dealership if you so desire. I will be supplying a basic line drawing and a few photos to get things rolling. It will keep everything on an equal plain, as the design aspect will not be an issue. If things go well then maybe next time there will be a design element to the modeling process. I’ll give it another week to hopefully get a few more posts of people interested then I’ll set up the poll. To make it worthwhile I’ll need at least six people who will participate, that is, post progress photos so that we all can make constructive criticism. So guys don't be disappointed that it's not an exotic, it will be challenging, it's all about details, finishing and presentation. To be able to vote on the poll you will have to login to enable the poll.

;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D BMWs look very chalenging with their reverse curves and crisp lines. The Z4 and the small 1 series are pretty interesting... Renault people are also creative, with the new Megane for example. Prabhat's choice is also nice. The only thing is the time involved for us beginners to sculpt the model ( I can sculpt about 1 hour a day maximum ). But with few other participants and considering we are going to have a lot of fun (and obviously learn so much), I will be happy to participate. ;D Steeve the photos step by step system is a good idea. What about this rule : each participant has the obligation to post photos at least every two weeks. It would make the contest even more instructive for everybody. I suppose we could use the type of clay we prefer as we're located in different areas. See ya Seb

Hi Seb, As far as what clay to use, you can use the clay that is easiest for you to get. It's the end result that is important. I wouldn't worry too much about the time frame, like I said, it will probably be a six month duration so there's plenty of time. If you guys want to post photos every two weeks that's fine with me. Obviously the more photos you post of your progress the more feedback you will get. This will always help especially if your new to clay modeling. The more interaction with other members the quicker the learning curve. I will probably start a new message board for this project as I can see it being a long thread, so Sunday I will post the vehicle selection to be voted on. Keep tuned in. Steve A

i like seb's selection of vehicles too But i understand that though it is tempting to jump into a sleek n sexy design, as most of us are still amateurs so we should start with something simpler.

Hi Prabhat, At last, someone is beginning to understand the process. You are absolutely correct, you cannot run before you can walk. To understand the process it is best to be comfortable with the design. If you are faced with creating a model that has all sorts of wonderful curves and facets for your first model, how will you approach it to construct the first surface? Sunday will reveal the vehicles to be voted on, so stay tuned. Steve A

Hello, So Prabhat, what do I read ?? Now you're effraid to model a difficult one !!! ;D ;D ;D And you Steeve, don't think you can scare me with your facets and curves ! I just love it ! ;D ;D Just kidding off course. Prabhat you're absolutly right, it's important to start step by step, because 3D and sculpting is not a "one day to be master" deal. I've learnt other difficult techniques ( airbrush, luxury finishing in painting, and currently in the art sculpture ) and I've seen so many people giving up because they had chosen a too much challenging first project. As beginners we need to start with simple basic shapes to keep a good balance between learning, effort and possibility to enjoy the process and result. The idea of a contest with a winner is not what matters. I hope that all the participants will post loads of photos and questions for everybody to improve. This way every participants will be the true winners. See ya on sunday ! Seb
