Hi, I am new to this board and I have a problem. See, everytime I use a template to make a cetrain shape, I get small bumps or ripples in the clay. This only happens when I'm using a template. Does any one know what I'm doing wrong? Am I pressing it too hard against the clay? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Roman, You generally get ripples through trying to take too much clay off in one pass. If the clay is already applied and is cold, the pressure needed to remove the excess clay will also cause ripples. If you apply the clay in small quantities and remove the excess with the template while it is still hot, the ripple effect will be minimal. At the end of the day you will have to steel the surface to get a smooth finish anyway. What you are experiencing is normal, if you are dragging a form with a template try to remove any excess material while the clay is still hot. You may find that you get a small amount of "tear out" on the clay. This is due to the clay cooling down and it's in an in between stage i.e. warm. When the clay is cold and the section needs to be change via template, a heat gun is used to soften the clay so that the template runs smoothly. You can change the section when the clay is cold but the template needs to have crisp edges and very small amounts of clay are removed at a time. Steve A

Thanks alot Steve A. I'll try to heat up the clay and remove less clay at a time. I'll tell you how it went as soon as possible. Thanks again for the help.

Steve A, I tried heating up the clay like you told me, and the amount of bumps I'm getting is much less then it used to be. I'm still getting a few here and there but for the most part its much smoother. Thanks for all the help, I really appreciate it.
