hey yo, As promised here are some pics off my second try with clay ( the first was looking like a very beautiful clay potato lol ). www.hostyldesigns.com/pages/Untitled-clay.htmI worked on it yesterday. As you can see it's a "half project". The goal was only to keep playing with shapes and understanding how surfaces influence each others. Of couse it's full of mistakes and not finished. I stopped at the finishers stage. I hope you masters will point what can be improved ( everything I guess ! ). I'm a bit effraid cause the more I play, the more I get interested by it and like it ... I have to check if it's possible to optain a certificate to work in this field. Y2Klay was used ..... think I need to find a harder clay for the details. Jeff, I've used my tweezers a little bit. ;D ;D Ali, you said you are using a harder clay for interiors and smaller scales for details. Do you mean something like Y2Klay or something harder ? I will see the Faberhard guy today. Will try to see if they have a harder stuff. Keep in touch Seb

Hi Seb, The photo's show that your've made a good start. I see that your've put a rebate into the surface and the lines look pretty crisp. Keep on developing the shape and see what comes of it. This may encourage other people to display their work. Good job!! Steve A

Hi fastback33, only work and work. It's not so smooth as I didn't use steels. Only finishers. Like for sulptury, you need to be patient, and work with light pressure on your tools at the finishing stage. It took about 4 hours to shape this sample. Even masters don't get the clay smooth in minutes. Just post some pics , I'm sure they will give you advices. See ya Seb

That's very good for a second try with clay mate. Can you tell me what methods you used to get those smooth and sharp cuts for the shape thats in the middle of the sculpture( the one that's almost football shaped)? I been working with clay for several months and I still cant get those results. All the help is appreciated.

Well there's no secret, personally I really prefer to work with a clay that is as hard as possible, so it can hold the details. What clay are you playing with ? soft ? hard ? I think the best way to improve is to post pictures so the great pros here will be able to give you some pointers. Don't be shy, we're all here to learn . Seb

For one, I don't have aworking camera at the time. and secondly I'm using the same clay you're using. So do you mind telling me how you get those clean cuts?

Hi Fastback33, To produce this test I didn’t use any templates. I just started from the block of clay and cut it following my inspiration. Tools to work on wood are useful. I like to use a V shaped tool. It’s all about trying again and again. I’m a sculptor working on different types of mediums, styling clay, water based clay, foams, plaster etc… so it may help. Just try to sculpt shapes and see what happens. Then learn from it. Good luck Seb

P.S.: This week I'll post a picture of a tool I use to work on clay. The tools section on Steve's home page is full of good ideas. cya
